After completing her doctoral studies, Susan worked as an associate at the National Center for the Improvement of Educational Assessment, where she partnered with states and national organizations to promote quality in educational assessment and accountability systems.

In 2019, Susan launched Lyons Assessment Consulting, which quickly became a leader in supporting innovation in educational assessment and accountability. Lyons Assessment Consulting services include supporting the strategic design of assessment and accountability systems, leading research, and serving as technical advisors to large and complex projects.

MEET THE OWNER

Susan Lyons, Ph.D.

Principal Consultant

Dr. Susan Lyons is committed to transforming traditional assessment systems to better serve the needs of students, educators, and the public. As the Principal Consultant at Lyons Assessment Consulting, Susan works alongside innovators to advance theory and practice in educational measurement.

Susan holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Math Education from Boston University and served as a math educator before pursuing her graduate work. She received her master’s and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with a focus on Research, Evaluation, Measurement and Statistics from the University of Kansas while working at KU’s Center for Educational Testing and Evaluation and the Center for Research on Learning.

Though she primarily works as a practitioner, Susan remains active in writing and publishing. She frequently releases white papers documenting her applied work, publishes in peer-reviewed journals, and presents at professional conferences.

In late 2020, Susan co-founded Women in Measurement, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing gender and racial equity in the field. Since its launch, she has served as the organization’s Executive Director, ushering it through the start-up phase to its now prominent position as a fixture within the measurement community, offering support for more than a thousand women in our field.

Maddie Criag is an essential part of the Lyons Assessment Consulting team and expertly handles all of our bookkeeping, invoicing, and financial reporting needs. Maddie is a certified QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor and specializes in helping service-based small businesses manage their finances.

Eneida Davis

Executive Assistant

Eneida Davis brings a versatile skill set and 15 years of experience in HR, banking, investments, and healthcare. Before joining Lyons Assessment Consulting, Eneida spent two years supporting executives in the healthcare sector. With extensive experience in HR, she is committed to addressing and supporting human resource needs, ensuring that individuals and organizations thrive. She is deeply passionate about community involvement and strives to make a positive impact through her work.

Clarissa Deverel-Rico, Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Associate

Dr. Clarissa Deverel-Rico is a Postdoctoral Researcher at BSCS Science Learning. Clarissa was a middle school science teacher before pursuing a doctorate in STEM education. Her research interests are located at the intersection of science learning, assessment, and equity; seeing assessment as a central part of designing learning environments that start with students.

Sam Ihlenfeldt

Research Associate

Sam Ihlenfeldt is a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota. Sam is passionate about improving communication around assessment and is actively engaged in research at local, state, and industry levels. With a keen interest in creating more equitable educational systems, Sam’s work contributes to the advancement of effective testing methodologies and empowers stakeholders in the field.

Alejandra Miranda, Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Associate

Dr. Miranda’s journey began at a Peruvian think tank where, driven by the need to address inequities in education, she decided to pursue a Ph.D. in quantitative methods in education. Her research interests encompass educational measurement, validity and fairness, as well as bilingual education and social and emotional competencies.

Miriam Taveras

Publications

Miriam Taveras is a first-generation immigrant Latina from the Dominican Republic and moved to the United STates to pursue a career in editing and book marketing. Miriam is a graduate student at Emerson College and works with the Lyons Assessment Consulting team to edit and polish our publications.

Jeri Thompson, Ed.D.

Consultant

Dr. Jeri Thompson combines her knowledge of educational systems to provide support for instruction, curriculum, assessments and accountability purposes. She has spent 40 years in public education, part-time faculty at universities in Maryland and Rhode Island, and at the Center for Assessment. Dr. Thompson’s desire is for all students to engage in high quality and equitable instruction and assessment practices.
