This study, conducted in partnership with a state education agency, emphasizes extensive stakeholder engagement to refine achievement level language in statewide assessments. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative methods, involving surveys and focus groups with over 4,000 students, 1,700 caregivers, and 500 educators. The findings indicate a clear preference among stakeholders for more encouraging and actionable language. This research underscores the importance of engaging with students, caregivers, and educators in the development of educational assessment tools, providing actionable insights for policymakers and educators aiming to enhance student outcomes through improved communication and support.
